The stair climbing

I work for a nursing college. The college is comprised of two main blocks, an old and a new. My office is located on the 3rd floor in the old block of the college. As the old building was built in the late 50s, it was not fitted with elevators at the time it was constructed due to costs constraints. What amazes me is that this building is as solid as it was then. Only minor maintenance works are done occasionally and it still holds well. The new block was added much later to cater to the growing demand of higher student enrollment for nursing course here, and it's fitted with elevators.

Some say the downside of the old building is not having the elevators to bring us upstairs to our offices. I agree at times, but mostly I am glad that the stairs provide a quick exercise for me in the morning. One can always choose to take the elevator in the new block but it would make more sense to climb the stairs because it is faster that way. Sharing the elevator with students would take much longer as students are rushing for classes throughout the day and hence filling the elevators at most times. But I can't deny that the temptation to take the elevator is there, especially when you have had to climb the stairs back and forth numerous times during a typical workday. And when the knee pain kicks in, I would succumb to the elevators.

The consolation of taking the stairs would be telling myself of the extra calories I'm burning and the stable antique stairs not commonly seen in public places anymore. I guess that's a good sign since most days I wake up charged and ready to get to my workplace.

Cheers.
